During the month of June, San Diego, and really the whole California coast, is known for being very cloudy, or as the locals call it, "June Gloom". It's a deck of low clouds offshore that can hang around for weeks on end.
However, on this partiular June day in 2019, it was anything but "Gloomy". A weak tropical wave moved up from Mexico and blanketed the sky with thick high clouds and light rain all day. At first, it seemed like it was going to be a cloudy evening, and I almost stayed home. But, I figured since I only lived 10 minutes away from this location at the time, and that you miss 100% of the shots you don't chase, I went down anyways. That turned out to be an incredible decision.
20 minutes before sunset, the sun snuck underneath the cloud deck as it was still sprinkling, and revealed a huge rainbow... a rarity in San Diego! It paired perfectly with the dramatic, desert like cliffs in Carlsbad, and the waves from a very high tide splashing around.
All in all, this night was a good reminder to always be out there, no matter how bad it may look.
