ABOUT CARTER

Carter Murphy standing on a sand dune in Death Valley National Park

Some photographers wait for good weather. I track it & chase it to add as much drama to my images as possible. I picked up my first camera at age 11, and somewhere between the shutter clicks and weather, I realized landscape/storm photography wasn't just a hobby. It was an addiction. A way of translating the raw, unfiltered power of the world into something people could feel.

Today, I'm based in Mammoth Lakes, CA, surrounded by some of the most dramatic and dynamic landscapes in the American West. My specialty lies at the intersection of meteorology and photography. I study weather patterns, track storm systems, and position myself where light and atmosphere collide in ways 99.99% of people never get to witness. The result is imagery that feels less like a photograph and more like a moment that had to happen exactly that way.

Whether it's golden hour breaking through a retreating storm over the Eastern Sierra, a calm evening on the coast, or a severe thunderstorm roaring through the open desert, every shot I create is the product of patience, preparation, and a near 2 decade obsession with photography & weather.
