Frequently Asked Questions

Ordering and shipping

How long until I get my print?

Every print is made to order, so nothing sits in a warehouse waiting. Allow at least 7 business days for production, plus transit time for the shipping option you choose.

What does shipping cost?

Nothing. Shipping is included in the price of every print. USPS for smaller pieces, UPS for the larger ones.

How will it arrive?

Paper prints ship rolled in a tube. Canvas and metal ship flat, with the mounting hardware already attached. Only the very largest pieces go out in a crate.

Can I ship to a P.O. box?

Yes, but I need a street address. It is best practice to include your PO Box Number in your street address anyways. If it ships USPS, it will be sent to your PO box. If UPS, straight to your door!

Do you ship internationally?

Not at this time. I ship within the United States only.

Can I change my order after placing it?

Once an order is placed I can't change the artwork, size, or finish, because production starts right away. The one exception is the shipping address, which I can update as long as the piece hasn't shipped yet. Email me at hello@cartermurphyphoto.com.

Sizes and finishes

What finishes do you offer?

Three: Fine Art Paper, Canvas, and Metal.

Which one should I choose?

Paper suits smaller spaces like a home office, a powder room, or a compact dining wall. Canvas and metal are the better call for larger pieces. Metal holds color the deepest and lasts the longest by a wide margin, so it's my usual recommendation for commercial spaces and high-traffic rooms. Canvas is the softer option and a good choice in a bright room where a reflective surface would fight the light.

If you're stuck, email me for direct help, or download my free guide.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Canvas and metal, yes. The hardware is already on the back. Paper prints ship rolled and will need framing.

How do I know what size to get?

There's a free sizing guide here. Beyond that, you can either use painters tape to mock it up, or feel free to send me a photo of your wall and I'll personally mock up the piece you're considering so you can see it in your own room before you commit, free of charge.

Can I order a custom size?

Often, yes. In-between sizes are usually possible, and on metal I can go larger than the biggest size listed. Email me with what you have in mind and I'll tell you what's doable.

Do you offer framing?

Please email me for all framing inquiries. While they are not available to select for each print on my storefront, you may custom order a turnkey framed print. There are extra costs involved and heavily depend on what you are looking for.

About the work

Are these real photographs?

Yes. Every image is one I went out and made, usually after tracking a weather system to be in the right place when it broke. My editing is minimal: contrast, curves, and color in Lightroom, plus removing dust spots. Nothing is composited, and nothing is generated.

I take it as a compliment when someone tells me an image looks unreal. It usually means the conditions were.

Where are they printed?

While I would love to print my own work, I just simply don't have the space to do it. My partner is Bay Photo Lab in Scotts Valley, California. I chose them for their quality and for their green-forward production practices. As someone who makes a living photographing wild places, that matters to me.

Are the prints limited edition?

Most of my work is open edition. I release limited editions occasionally, and when a piece is one, the listing will say so.

Are prints signed?

Not by default. If you'd like yours signed, just ask before it ships and I'll take care of it.

Why don't the colors on my screen match the print?

Screens emit light and paper reflects it, so the two will never match exactly. That's true of every printer, not just mine. I don't guarantee an exact color match, but it is VERY close.

Care

How do I look after my print?

Metal wipes clean with a dry microfiber cloth, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner if it needs more. Canvas prefers dry dusting and, at most, a barely damp cloth. Paper should never get wet. Use a soft brush for dust, and a dry kneaded eraser for stubborn marks.

Full details are on the Care + Handling page.

Policies

My print arrived damaged. What now?

I'll replace it, free. Photograph the damage, keep your shipping receipt, and email me at hello@cartermurphyphoto.com within 7 days of delivery. You'll be responsible for the cost of returning the damaged piece and shipping the replacement.

Please give your piece a look as soon as it arrives. Anything damaged or not as ordered needs to be reported in writing inside that 7-day window, after which the artwork is considered accepted.

Can I cancel my order?

All work is custom-made and production begins immediately after purchase, so orders can't simply be cancelled. A request to cancel or modify an order carries a 50% restocking fee. Once a piece has been produced and shipped, it's non-cancellable, non-returnable, and non-refundable.

Can I return a print?

Standard prints can be returned within 14 days of receipt for store credit toward a future purchase. The piece needs to come back in like-new condition, and you'll cover return shipping.

Limited editions are the exception. Those aren't eligible for return or exchange. If a piece is a limited edition, its listing will say so.

Do you collect sales tax?

Where required, yes. It's included in your order total.

Can I use one of your images for my business, website, or product?

Copyright stays with me, and buying a print isn't a license to reproduce it. If you're interested in licensing an image, email me at hello@cartermurphyphoto.com and let's talk about what you have in mind. I may be able to make an exception for the right situation.
Please note, any of my images distributed/used without strict permission by me personally, complete with a signature, will be taken seriously at the greatest extent of the law.

Gift cards

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. eGift cards are available on the site and can be used toward any purchase. They're delivered by email, can't be reloaded or redeemed for cash, and can't be used to buy other gift cards. Keep the confirmation email; a lost or stolen card can't be replaced without it.

Working with me

Do you shoot weddings, portraits, or events?

No. I photograph landscapes and weather, and that's where I'm useful. For anything else you'll be better served by someone who specializes in it. Please feel free to contact me directly for recommendations. I am mutually connected with a large amount of talented individuals.

Do you run workshops or take people out shooting?

Not for Chasing storms, as it involves real risk. I've had lightning land close enough to send static out of my own camera, and it isn't something I'm willing to sell tickets to. The only people who come along are close friends who understand exactly what they're signing up for. For all other general landscape inquiries, I do! Please contact me directly and we can chat through exactly what you’re looking to accomplish!

I'm an interior designer / I'm buying for a business. Can we talk?

Please do. Email me at hello@cartermurphyphoto.com with a little about the space, and I'll put together a curated selection with recommended sizes and finishes. I can also mock pieces up on photos of the actual walls. Larger projects have their own pricing. Tell me the scope and I'll come back with numbers.
